Among the oldest surviving examples of beach cottages in the state, one family has owned the Hut for four generations. In 2016 Hurricane Matthew nearly destroyed The Hut. Through National Park Service eligibility of the Hut’s historic significance and homeowners determination, the Hut was lovingly restored piece by piece, recovering what could be salvaged from the remaining debris and only new construction where necessary. The home was elevated 3′-0″, coquina recovered to rebuild the fireplace, walls panels re-installed, photos studied to re-build ceiling joists and rafters as they were constructed in the 1890s. Today the Hut is a warm and welcoming beach cottage with modern touches and deep history.
